There are many beggars on the streets. In Nigeria and indeed every other country however developed. The rate at which beggars increase on a daily basis is alarming! I mean, there are lots of people that beg but who do not need to!
Why do they beg? Because they cant provide for themselves? Or find someone to take care of their needs? What happened to working to earn a living?
There are many beggars who do not have any disability or ailment. They are just so darn lazy!!!
And have you heard the phrase "a beggar has no choice"? That is now a forgotten phrase. Many beggars now have choices. You give a beggar 10naira and he looks at you in disgust. Some of them even reject it. My sister once collected her money back from a beggar when he was complaining that the money she gave him was too small.
These beggars give birth to more children than those who feed them. Makes one wonder why they would want to bring children forth when they know very well that there is no means of livelihood, aside begging that is.
I remember an incident that happened when I was still young. There was this man that used to come beg at my mum's office. He was supposedly deaf and dumb. He would come around almost on a daily basis and people would give him money. On a particular day, someone went to visit my mum in the office and while the lady was there the deaf and dumb guy arrived. The lady recognised him and called his nam
My mum told her he couldnt hear because he was deaf and dum and the lady started laughing. She informed my mum that she knew him very well and he was neither deaf nor dumb. She moved closer to him and called him again. The guy looked up in anger and moved on very fast. In a twinkle of an eye he took to his heels.
There are many 'beggars' like that.
Is there any reason for us to have beggars in our society? Are there no menial jobs these people can do? Many of these beggars are even so contented with getting free money that if presented with the opportunity to work, wont take the job.
Remember, there's nothing free in Freetown and No food for a lazy man.

They are mostly bunch of lazy people.
ReplyDeleteI believe that when beggars take positions to the streets and roads that the authorities and entire public has a right and duty to chase them away irrespective of their problems they bring forward, a big reason why the come in numerous packs in lagos is because the business seems so lucrative that even the beggars eat more than 3 square meals a day, well balanced diet, use very sophisticated phones and even put in calling credits and make phone calls long enough not to depict their profession, Nigerians in Lagos are particular about giving alms stupidly without even knowing that such alms given could be more harming to the people begging and on a long term period, Nigerians in Lagos would just give money to beggars on the street because they feel that they need help which giving money is the solution, I will share some incidence on few ocassions, one was around the Festac and I saw a beggar infront of a popular pharmacy where customers troop in and out, the beggar kept getting alms and saving it up in his pocket until a passerby walked with some money and I watched him from my car as he made gestures praying on the money and circled the money over his head for about three times and tried giving to the beggar, wow! The beggar swayed from direction he intended putting the money and told him he didn't want it, I kept laughing and wondering what the hausa beggar must have encountered to not collect the money, this shows that beggars have a choice because if everyone was to circle money around their head in prayers then I guess the beggars would have to take to another profession.
ReplyDeleteAnother ocassion was when I was walking through a narrow gate only to be greeted by a beggar asking for alms in same festac town and I looked at him and told him even if I had money that I wouldn't give him, walked to my car and entered, I was preparing to leave when I saw him bring out a phone sophisticated for a beggar and started a conversation in hausa I could understand hausa and pick a few from what he was saying that work has been good so far and he has left the old place for the new place and asking about the loved ones back home after which he hung up. I just shook my damn head!
Another time I was walking when I saw a popular joint along the road mamaput. I was trying to get recharge cards from a neighbor around the mamaput and people holding bowls asking for her to serve when I saw people giving 100 for a meal. Some 200 naira. Rice 50 naira egg 30 naira and spagetti 20 naira but this beggar asked for rice 80 naira one fish 100 naira 3 pieces of meet for 60 naira, beans 50 naira, spagetti 50 naira and a bottle of coke 60 naira orobo all making 400 naira I was like wow. A beggar eats more than the people who give alms? I was still waiting for the recharge cards brought to me when the beggar finished and the deep his hands in his riga (big hasua gown) and brings out 3 naira and places it in this begging bowl cleans his face and stretches his begging stick. Of course that goes to say he's ready from work right from the place he just had eaten and can even beg me now standing by the mamaput. I looked at him and blamed the public
If we continue to habor this in our society they would keep bringing unwanted children to the public to take care of because they equally have been taking care of even at a maturity stage of their lives, I wonder how two beggars blind and deaf on a popular street had a bouncing baby! I was so dumbfounded when I heard about it how can people who dobt have a means of living end up depending on the public begging to feed go ahead and have kids and add the kids to their pack and guess what they have more expectation from their hosts lol
Nigerians have misplaced priority towards generousity because I tell you in the end these beggars are theives and time bomb soon to explode
Lol. True
DeleteLol@ circling money around his head.. I once offered a begger a job and she refused bcos its more lucrative to beg for money frm members of the catholic church in v/i.
DeleteCan you just believe that? Begging is now a lucrative business
DeleteI think this is the right time 4 our Government to try as much as posible to pass the law against the beggers
ReplyDeleteToo bad
